Can I Make Changes to an Adoption Plan as My Child Gets Older?

Your adoption journey doesn’t end the day your child is placed with their adoptive family. As your child grows, your desires for your relationship with them might also shift. If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s possible to change an adoption plan as time passes, you’re not alone. Many birth parents ask this same question.

At Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, we want you to feel empowered and supported, even after the adoption is finalized. Continue reading to learn what can and can’t be adjusted as your child grows.

What Is an Adoption Plan?

An adoption plan outlines the level of contact and communication you want with your child and their adoptive family. This plan may include how often you’d like to receive updates, whether you want to visit your child, and how much identifying information you wish to share. Today, most adoptions are open or semi-open, allowing for ongoing connection.

However, it’s natural for birth parents to want to revisit their plan as time passes.

Can the Adoption Plan Be Changed?

Adoption is a permanent legal process. The decision cannot be reversed once your parental rights are relinquished and a judge finalizes the adoption. However, the amount of ongoing contact you have is not fixed.

It’s important to note that open adoption agreements are not legally enforceable in Texas. As a result, changes to an adoption plan depend on how well you and the adoptive family communicate, not on what a judge decides.

If you would like more or less contact or to switch to a different form of communication, you can discuss those requests with the adoptive family. In many cases, adoptive families are open to adjusting the agreement to meet everyone’s comfort levels, especially when it benefits the child.

What If the Adoptive Family Isn’t Open to Changes?

Sometimes, birth parents want more contact than was initially agreed upon, but the adoptive family may be hesitant. These conversations can feel sensitive and discouraging. That’s where we come in, helping both sides feel heard and respected through professional support.
